The first passenger railway in the world, the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, still sees heavy traffic today. Its many branches and rivals, north of the Mersey to the Scottish Borders, have been the haunts of the great variety of British Diesel locomotive types which include classes 20, 31, 37, 40, 47, 50 and 55. Examples of these are seen at work in the final two decades of the 20th Century. We also take a circular tour from Liverpool to Manchester via Carlisle with a heavy concentration on coal traffic.
